Setting the Standard for Windscreen Repair & Replacement in South Africa

SAWRA is South Africa’s independent authority for automotive glass standards, technician certification and workshop accreditation.

The South African Windscreen Repair Association (SAWRA) is an independent, industry-led standards and accreditation body for automotive glass repair and replacement.

SAWRA exists to protect road safety, consumer trust and industry credibility by defining clear standards, verifying competence and maintaining a transparent national registry of accredited technicians and workshops.

SAWRA standards are developed for South African conditions and are aligned with leading internationally recognised automotive glass, repair and ADAS best-practice principles.

We do not operate as a repair business, training company or supplier. Our role is simple and focused: set the standard, assess compliance and recognize competence.

Our Role in the Industry

SAWRA is responsible for:

  • Developing and maintaining automotive glass repair and replacement standards
  • Accrediting individual technicians based on proven competence
  • Accrediting workshops and mobile units linked to accredited technicians
  • Administering Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for experienced technicians
  • Maintaining public registries for verification by consumers, insurers and fleets
  • Supporting consistent, defensible industry compliance

This structure ensures SAWRA remains neutral, credible and trusted across the industry.

What SAWRA Is (and Why It Matters)

SAWRA functions as a standards authority, not a commercial operator.

This means:

  • We define how work must be done
  • We verify who is competent to do it
  • We recognise businesses that operate within the standards

This separation protects:

  • Technicians from unfair gatekeeping
  • Workshops from liability exposure
  • Insurers and fleets from quality risk
  • Consumers from unsafe repairs

Our Mission

To advance and protect the automotive glass repair and replacement industry by:

  • Promoting safe, standardised repair practices
  • Recognising professional competence
  • Supporting ethical, compliant businesses
  • Improving public confidence in certified work

SAWRA’s Network
